Little Black Bag

Little Black Bag is a online shopping site where shoppers receive 2-4 items valued at least $100 total for $49.95 (plus shipping).  You start with an online quiz to determine your style.  You are then presented with items (accessories, handbags, jewelry, home good) based on your style.  You choose one item from the site, then the Little Black Bag stylists choose 2-3 additional items which are not revealed until after the you check out.  At that time you can then trade any of your items with others shoppers.

The concept is loosely based on a Japanese tradition known as "fukubukuro" or "Lucky Bag" or "Mystery Bag."  "Fukubukuro" is a Japanese New Year's Day custom where merchants make grab bags filled with unknown random contents and sell them for a substantial discount, usually 50% or more off the list price of the items contained within.  Shoppers will then often trade their items with other shoppers for something they really want.  Fukubukuro is an easy way for stores to unload excess and unwanted merchandise from the previous year, due to a Japanese superstition that one must not start the New Year with unwanted trash from the previous year and start clean.

I was intrigued by the concept and have wanted to try it for a while, but decided not to purchase just for the sake of it and waited until there was something I really wanted on the site.

Last month, I received an email from Little Black Bag (LLB) featuring the Street Level Color Block Tote.   As someone with HUGE handbag envy over the Celine Luggage Tote, I had to have this bag and immediately logged into LLB to order.

After checkout 2 additional items were revealed to me; a pair of earrings (I can't even remember what kind) and a pink glittery cosmetic case.   I didn't mind the earrings, but did not need another cosmetic case, nor was the style really for me.  I decided to do some trading.

Trading is relatively easy.  You select what you want to trade and for what and the request is sent to anyone with your desired item in their bag.  They can then accept or deny your request.  At the same time, other shoppers may send you a request for items in your bag in which you can view what they are trading for and either accept or deny their request.  I found a Case-Mate iPhone that I wanted and offered up both the earrings and cosmetic case in exchange for it.  In less then an hour my offer was accepted.  With two items in my bag  that I was happy with, I then opted to ship my bag.   (Once you ship you may no longer participate in trading)

Shipping times were pretty average and I got my Little Black Bag in about 5 days.

The Little Black Bag was actually a white box containing my items.

As mentioned I received a Street Level Color Block Tote.  Overall I really like the tote.  It is a tiny bit smaller than I had expected but I will still get use out of it.

The Case-Mate iPhone case I received was the Jessica Swift Peacock Feathers Tough Case.

This is a rather sturdy bulky case, which I tend to like.  It it has two layers of protection.  The bottom layer is a black silicon skin and the top is a hard shell that fits over the skin.  My only qualm about this case is that the silicon skin is black.  I would have preferred it to be white since I have the white iPhone.  I tried to find a white replacement online, but haven't found anything.  I can probably try a regular white skin, but the one that comes with this has groves that fit into the hard shell so I am not sure how a regular skin will work.

Overall I am pretty happy with my purchase from Little Black BagThe price of the handbag retails for $69 and the iPhone case retails for $40, so for $49.95, I received $109 worth of merchandise.  As a lot of the inventory is not anything I would normally purchases just for the hell of it, I don't know if I would order again unless I saw something I absolutely wanted.

Disclaimer: I purchased this item on my own and am not being compensated.  All the opinions expressed are my own.
