August Birchbox

Since September is just around the corner, I figured I should probably unbox/review my August Birchbox for you.  I got my Birchbox extremely early this month.  In fact, it seems to come earlier and earlier.  Do you just get higher up on the distribution list the longer you are on it?  I was happy when my birchbox arrived within just one day.  Since it shipped from Springfield, MA I am guessing they added some distribution centers perhaps???  Anyway, before jumping right in and telling you what I got,  as usual I wanted to try out the products and give you a good review of what I received.  So without further ado, here it goes.

The theme for August was Beauty School.  With back to school right around the corner, Birchbox put together a beauty supply kit with must have essentials and new products to take you through the fall.  My box contained 5 products; Juicy Couture Viva la Juicy La Fleur; Stila Forever Your Curl Mascara, Shu Uemura Art of Hair Essence Absolue Nourishing Protective Oil, Talika Oil-Free Lash Conditioning Cleaner, and a Schick Hydro Silk Razor.

Juicy Couture Viva la Juicy La Fleur, - This modern scent is a feminine blend of wild berries, mandarin, and waterlily Full-size (pictured) $70

I am normally not a big fan of Juicy Couture but I did like this scent.  I can definitely smell a  hint of the berries and mandarin, which I like so it's not super floral.  I probably wouldn't buy it full size just because there are other scents I like more, but I would definitely use the full sample.

Stila Forever Your Curl Mascara - Put down your eyelash curler: this waterproof formula keeps lashes curved and uplifted.  Full Sized (pictured) $22

While I liked the mascara (it wasn't clumpy and gave my fuller lashes) I didn't notice my lashes to be any curlier than they were before.  While I probably won't buy full size, I do like the smaller size of the wand and will use it on my bottom lashes.

Shu Uemura Art of Hair Essence Absolue Nourishing Protective Oil - Stylists call this luxurious oil 'liquid' gold.  It keeps strands soft and silky.  Full size (pictured) $68

This smells AMAZING!  It has kind of a warm sweet smell.  The only thing I can think of too compare the smell to is the Body Shops Brazil Nut Body Butter, more subtle. That might not even be a good comparison, but it smells that good.

I first used it on wet hair as more of leave in conditioning treatment, and didn't see any results.   The next time I used it I ran it through air dried hair and immediately noticed a difference in my hair; it was softer and less frizzy.  It is a little pricey, $68 for the full size, but if I had birchbox points to redeem I would definitely get the full size.

Talika Oil-Free Lash Conditioning Cleaner - This French brand's heroic makeup remover banishes all traces of waterproof mascara.  Full size (pictured) $25

I'm going to be completely honest here.  When I saw this in my Birchbox I took one look at it and thought "why would I need a separate cleanser for my mascara?"  I threw it aside and didn't give it a second thought until earlier this week when I thought it was a great idea to wear mascara to work. Now I don't tend to wear mascara on a regular basis because for one, I am lucky to have rather long dark full eyelashes, and second I just hate having to remove mascara.  The skin around my eyes is very sensitive and any extra rubbing or cleaning is going to leave my eye sockets stinging.  Unless it is a special occasion or a big night out, I just don't put myself through the torture. This actually made the removal a breeze. I applied it to my fingers then rubbed it along my lashes and wiped with a cotton pad.  Easy peasy.  No stinging or rubbing my eyes raw. For $25 I will absolutely be buying this full size.

Schick Hydro Silk Razor - this month's Birchbox extra.  Thanks to this innovative new razor, we’ll be showing off our legs all season long. It has a water-activated moisturizing serum that moisturizes for up to two hours after shaving. Plus, the five blades have skin guards that follow the natural contours of your body to smooth skin and help prevent irritation. The result: silky legs, every time.

Oh Schick Hydro Silk Razor, I wanted to love you.  You let me down!  A pretty loyal fan of the Gillette Venus family I figured I would give this a chance since my birchbox include a full razor this month.  I thought maybe it would wow me and sway me away from my Venus. Wrongo Bongo!  It has this plastic ring around the blade that didn't allow me to get a closer enough shave.  And in the interested of full disclosure, when I shaved a toe (yes I on occasion shave my toes) the plastic ring/shield thing didn't allow me to maneuver it well and I took a chunk out of my toe.  I'll stick with my Venus, thanks.

Also included in this month's Birchbox was Beauty School guide with information and tips.

Lastly, Birchbox is donating 15% of proceeds from the Birchbox Shop all month to Pencils of Promise to help build a school in Central America.

Even though I wouldn't buy everything in my August Birchbox, I still enjoyed the samples and will get use out of them.
